One man’s struggle with low testosterone For Terence Wyatt, 53, age was just a number. An accomplished outdoorsman and an enthusiast of activities like rock climbing and whitewater rafting, he had every intention of living his life just as he wanted until he couldn’t anymore. To his extreme disappointment, however, that moment came far sooner than he expected. “It started with the bouts of exhaustion,” Terence remarked. “I normally pace myself well and keep my energy up, but suddenly, I was getting really winded in the middle of what used to be a decent hike. I tried to compensate by slowing down some, but things just kept becoming harder to do.” The decreased performance was followed by many nights of restlessness and anxiety. It was more difficult to sleep at night, and only added to his fatigue. It came to the point, Terence recounted, that relaxing in front of the television at home seemed much more welcoming than a weekend in the great outdoors. “It got pretty bad,” Terence said. “Here I was, missing my old life, and worrying that age had finally caught up with me. I became snappy and easily irritated, which made things tense at my house with my wife and kids. Eventually I got sick of moping about and thought, for the first time, that maybe there was something wrong with me.” Terence went to the doctors at his local hospital, but none of them could find anything wrong. He checked out fine at his physical exam, and in the end, they told him that it was probably just age setting in. Unconvinced and unwilling to throw his old life away so easily, Terence looked around online for a solution. “It was then that I discovered the Institute of Men’s Health,” Terence said. “I didn’t know what to expect, so I was pleased to find that they were extremely professional, and sounded like they really wanted to help me out.” Terence scheduled a meeting with IMH doctors and was soon diagnosed with early onset andropause, caused by deficiency in his body’s production of the testosterone hormone. He entered a treatment program that was closely monitored by IMH specialists, and after a few months, things started to look up. “At the beginning I was frustrated that nothing was happening,” Terence said. “But I stuck it out, and I started to feel like my old self again. All the pain, and tiredness, and the negative vibes just seemed to lift from my shoulders. I am happy to say that I’m close to 100 percent from what I was before this all began. IMH may not have saved my life from some life-threatening disease, but they sure made it a lot easier to live again.” Today, Terence is back to his usual habits, pleased that for him, and for other men who may have found themselves in a similar situation, one is only as old as he feels. |
